Skip the Shuttle - The Pa'rus Trail in Zion National Park: The Underrated Gem You're Probably Skipping 🌿

Dog-friendly, stroller-friendly, and seriously stunning β€” here's why this easy paved trail deserves a spot on your Zion itinerary.

If you're planning a trip to Zion National Park, there's a good chance the Pa'rus Trail isn't at the top of your list. Honestly? It wasn't at the top of mine either. As someone who has hiked most of the trails in Zion, I'll admit I kept skipping this one β€” figuring it was just a flat filler trail for people who didn't want a real hike.

I was wrong. πŸ˜…

The Pa'rus Trail is one of the most underrated spots in the entire park, and once you know what it offers β€” especially from a logistics standpoint β€” it just might become your favorite way to kick off a day in Zion.

What Is the Pa'rus Trail? πŸ—ΊοΈ

The Pa'rus Trail (pronounced pah-roos, meaning "bubbling water" in the Paiute language) is a 3-mile round trip paved trail that runs along the Virgin River from the Zion Visitor Center to Canyon Junction near Shuttle Stop 3.

It's flat, wide, fully paved, and unlike almost every other trail in the park, it is open to dogs on leash and strollers β€” making it the go-to option for families and pet parents who want to actually enjoy Zion together. 🐾

Why It's Actually Special ✨

The scenery on this trail is no joke. You're walking alongside the Virgin River with unobstructed views of some of Zion's most iconic canyon walls towering on both sides of you. The light in the early evening especially? Chef's kiss. πŸŒ…

There are bridges, cottonwood trees, and river access points throughout β€” it feels peaceful and immersive in a way that's hard to find when you're wedged into a crowded shuttle heading up the main canyon.

This trail gives you a different perspective of the park than most visitors ever see, and because so many people overlook it, it tends to stay calm even when the rest of Zion is packed.

How to Do It Without the Shuttle Headache 🚌

Where to park + the Pa’rus Trail

Here's where the Pa'rus Trail gets really smart as a strategy, not just a hike.

Option 1: Start at the Visitor Center Park at the Zion Visitor Center β€” the trail starts right there. Walk the 1.5 miles to Canyon Junction (Shuttle Stop 3), hop on the shuttle, and let it carry you back to the Visitor Center. No backtracking, no extra mileage, and no fighting the shuttle crowds because you're boarding midway through the route rather than at the main stop. OR do the full 3 miles and walk back to the Visitor Center the way you came

Option 2: Start at Canyon Junction Drive into the park to Canyon Junction and park in the pull-off spots near Shuttle Stop 3. This is the far end of the trail, so you can start here and walk toward the Visitor Center instead - then turn back around to finish the full 3 miles.

  • Great if you want to avoid parking at the Visitor Center lot entirely.

Option 3: Full 3-Mile Round Trip Start at either end and simply walk back the way you came. It's a completely manageable distance and a beautiful walk in both directions β€” the views shift as the light changes throughout the day.

Best Time to Visit ⏰

We hit the Pa'rus Trail in the middle of Summer (which is supposed to be Zion’s busiest time) but we went after dinner at 7pm and it was genuinely peaceful. Evening is a sweet spot - the crowds thin out significantly, the light gets golden and dramatic, and the temperature drops to something actually enjoyable. Because it’s Summer - the sunset is around 9pm - giving you plenty of time to enjoy this gentle stroll.

Early morning works beautifully too if you want the trail mostly to yourself.

What to Know Before You Go πŸ“‹

  • βœ… Dogs allowed on leash β€” the only trail in Zion where this is permitted

  • βœ… Strollers and wheelchairs β€” fully paved and accessible

  • βœ… Bikes + E-bikes allowed β€”stay under 15mph, watch for blind curves + pedestrians

  • βœ… No shuttle required β€” hike it as a loop

  • πŸ“ Trailhead Parking: Zion Visitor Center parking area (or Springdale if Visitor parking is full)

  • πŸ“ Far end: Canyon Junction / Shuttle Stop 3

  • πŸ“ Distance: 1.5 miles one way, 3 miles round trip

  • πŸ₯Ύ Difficulty: Easy β€” flat paved path

Final Thoughts πŸŒ„

The Pa'rus Trail won't show up on most "best hikes in Zion" lists, and honestly that's part of what makes it great. It's accessible, it's scenic, it's strategic - and it's one of those trails that reminds you why Zion is so special even on a slow, easy walk.

Don't sleep on this one. 🌿
