The Perfect 3-Day White Sands National Park Itinerary 🌵✨🏜️

White Sands at Sunset

If you’re planning a trip to White Sands National Park, this is the EXACT 3-day itinerary I’d recommend 🙌✨

This will give you a mix of epic desert views, mountain towns, waterfalls, hiking, quirky roadside stops, and unreal sunsets 🌅

Between the white gypsum dunes 🤍, cool mountain air 🌲, pistachio ice cream 🍦, and hikes that look straight out of another planet 👽… this trip completely surprised us in the best way.

🏠 HOT TIP - Where to Stay:

We used Alamogordo as our home base, and honestly it’s the perfect spot for exploring southern New Mexico without constantly packing up and moving 🚐💨

Day 1 — Cloudcroft + Waterfalls + Mountain Views 🌲💦⛰️

Start your trip by escaping the desert heat ☀️ and heading up into the mountains to Cloudcroft.

The drive alone is incredible 🚗✨ — winding mountain roads, huge overlooks, and a dramatic switch from desert scenery 🌵 to alpine forest 🌲

Hiking Bridal Veil Falls with White Sands in the distace

Stop 1: Bridal Veil Falls Trail 💧🥾

Kick off the morning with the short and family-friendly hike to Bridal Veil Falls.

This is the perfect easy waterfall hike if you want something scenic without committing to an all-day trek 🙌

Quick Trail Info:

  • Distance: About 0.6 miles roundtrip

  • Difficulty: Easy 👍

  • Kid-friendly: Absolutely 👏

And the cool mountain air after being in the desert? Elite 😮‍💨✨

Cloudcroft downtown has the cutest vibe

Stop 2: Explore Downtown Cloudcroft ☕🛍️🍔

This little mountain town seriously feels like a Hallmark movie 🎄✨

You’ll find:

  • Cute local boutiques 🛍️

  • Cozy coffee shops ☕

  • Southwestern souvenirs 🌵

  • Small-town mountain vibes everywhere 🏔️

Perfect for a slower afternoon 🤍

Stop 3: Osha Trail + Old Railway Bridge 🌲🚂✨

Finish the day with the scenic Osha Trail.

This easy loop trail has beautiful forest views 🌲 plus remnants of old railway history which is located in a pull-off nearby if you want to get a closer look 🚂

Trail Stats:

  • Distance: Around 2.5 miles loop

  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate 👍

  • Elevation Gain: Minimal

Golden hour here is SO pretty 🌞✨

Day 2 — Pistachios + White Sands National Park 🌰🏜️✨

Stop 1: World’s Largest Pistachio 🌰😂

On your way toward White Sands, stop at McGinn’s PistachioLand — home of the World’s Largest Pistachio.

Yes it’s touristy.
Yes you should absolutely stop 😂👏

Here you can:

  • Taste-test pistachios 🌰

  • Do a wine tasting 🍷

  • Take a farm tour 🚜

  • Buy pistachio souvenirs 😂

  • Eat pistachio ice cream 🍦✨

Honestly? The ice cream alone is worth it.

Stop 2: White Sands National Park - Guide 🤍🏜️✨

Now for the main event…

Sledding the dunes was the funnest part!

White Sands National Park seriously feels like another planet 👽✨

First Stop: Visitor Center 🎟️

Before heading into the dunes:

  • Stop at the visitor center (pick up a map)

  • Rent a sled 🛷 or snowboard 🏂

    • Or bring your own because they DO sell out sometimes 👀

Sledding the dunes is one of the most fun parts of visiting White Sands — especially with kids 👏✨

Best Area for the Tallest Dunes 🏜️

Drive farther into the park toward the Alkali Flat area for the biggest, most dramatic dunes 🤍

The farther you drive, the more unreal it gets 😍

Stay for Sunset 🌅💜✨

The landscape completely changes at sunset

This part is NON-NEGOTIABLE 👏

At sunset, the dunes start turning soft pink, purple, and gold 💜🩷✨

It genuinely looks fake.

Bring:

  • Water 💧

  • Sunglasses 🕶️

  • Sand-friendly shoes 👟

  • A light jacket for after sunset 🧥

And don’t rush out early — sunset is the WHOLE experience 🌅

🐕 FUN FACT: White Sands National Park is DOG FRIENDLY

Day 3 — Organ Mountains: Dripping Springs Trail ⛰️🌵✨

One of the many historic ruins of Dripping Springs Trail

On your final day, drive toward Las Cruces to explore the Organ Mountains.

These jagged peaks seriously look like the Tetons dropped into the desert 😍🏔️

While they weren’t officially the inspiration for The Wizard of Oz, they absolutely have that dramatic cinematic feel 🎬✨

Hike: Dripping Springs Trail 🥾🌵

Beautiful backdrop of the mountains against the crumbling history

One of the best hikes in the area is Dripping Springs Natural Area.

This trail combines:

  • Desert scenery 🌵

  • Mountain views ⛰️

  • Historic ruins 🏚️

  • An old resort village ✨

Trail Stats:

  • Distance: Around 4 miles roundtrip

  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate gravel trail👍

  • Elevation Gain: ~450 feet

It’s the perfect final stop before heading home 🚐✨

BONUS STOP: A Fun Roadside Attraction Nearby:

If you have time - stop in Las Cruces for some authentic New Mexican food AND - check out the massicve Recycled Roadrunner Sculpture, a 20ft tall and 40ft long roadside attraction made entirely from salvaged waste. It is a fantastic photo op and a must-see for anyone passing through the area.

Location & Access:

  • Located at the Interstate 10 rest area just west of Las Cruces, New Mexico (between mileposts 134 and 135).

Final Thoughts 🤔

Southern New Mexico completely exceeded our expectations🏜️

In just 3 days you can experience:

  • Massive white sand dunes 🤍

  • Cool mountain forests 🌲

  • Waterfalls 💦

  • Historic hiking trails 🥾

  • Quirky roadside attractions 😂

  • Unreal sunsets 🌅
