Cadillac Mountain Acadia National Park: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go πŸŒ…β›°οΈ

If you're planning a trip to Acadia National Park in Maine, chances are Cadillac Mountain is somewhere near the top of your must-see list.

And for good reason! At 1,530 feet above sea level, Cadillac Mountain is the highest point in Acadia National Park and offers incredible panoramic views across Mount Desert Island, the Atlantic Ocean, and the surrounding landscape. 🌊

But before you hop in the car and head toward the summit, there's something VERY important to know:

You can't simply show up and drive to the top during the reservation season. 🚨

Here's everything you need to know about visiting Cadillac Mountain, including vehicle reservations, parking, the Cadillac Summit Road drive, hiking options, sunrise visits, and what you'll find at the summit.

πŸš— Do You Need a Reservation for Cadillac Mountain?

Yes - if you plan to DRIVE Cadillac Summit Road during the reservation season, you need a vehicle reservation.

From approximately mid-May through mid-October, visitors driving to the Cadillac Mountain summit need a timed-entry vehicle reservation.

The reservation costs $6 per vehicle and is separate from your Acadia National Park entrance pass.

And here's an important detail that isn't always obvious:

⏰ Your reservation is for your ENTRY time - not a time limit at the summit!

Once you've entered during your reserved time, you can take your time exploring Cadillac Mountain. You aren't required to leave after a certain number of minutes.

That means you can walk around, take photos, check out the summit signs, explore the gift shop, use the restrooms, and enjoy the views without feeling like you're racing the clock. πŸ™Œ

🎟️ When Are Cadillac Mountain Reservations Released?

This is especially important if you're planning your Acadia National Park trip in advance.

Reservations are released in two batches:

  • 90 days in advance: 30% of reservations are released for advance planning.

  • 2 days in advance: The remaining 70% are released for last-minute trip planning.

So if you don't find the reservation you want 90 days out, don't give up! πŸ‘€

A large portion of reservations aren't released until just two days before the date.

This is particularly important if you're hoping to visit Cadillac Mountain for sunrise, when reservations can be much more difficult to snag.

πŸŒ… Cadillac Mountain Sunrise

Cadillac Mountain is famous for being one of the first places in the United States to see the sunrise during certain times of the year.

And yes β€” watching the sun come up from the summit sounds absolutely magical. πŸŒ„

But sunrise is also one of the most popular times to visit Cadillac Mountain, which means those reservations can be significantly harder to get.

If sunrise is your goal, plan ahead and be ready when reservations become available.

And remember: you need the appropriate vehicle reservation to drive Cadillac Summit Road to the summit during the reservation season.

πŸ›£οΈ Driving Cadillac Summit Road

Once you check in at the entrance station, you'll begin the drive up Cadillac Summit Road.

The road is approximately 3.5 miles long and is paved, winding, and scenic. πŸš—πŸ’¨

There are several places along the way where you can pull over for photos and take in the views.

Keep an eye out for:

🚴 Road cyclists
πŸ₯Ύ People walking alongside the road
πŸ“Έ Other visitors stopping at pull-offs

And one VERY important note for our fellow RV travelers:

🚫 RVs and trailers are not allowed on Cadillac Summit Road.

So if you're visiting Acadia National Park in a motorhome or towing a travel trailer or fifth wheel, you'll need another way to get to the summit.

πŸ…ΏοΈ Cadillac Mountain Parking

Park at the EAST circular Parking Lot to avoid walking

Once you reach the summit, you'll find parking areas where you can leave your vehicle and explore.

There are two parking areas, and here's our little tip:

πŸ‘‰ Don't stop at the first parking area you see!

Keep driving toward the main circular summit area where you park at the EAST Parking Lot

Of course, parking availability can vary significantly depending on how busy the mountain is, especially around sunrise and other peak visitation times.

But definitely try to get a spot farther up.

⛰️ What Is There to Do at the Summit?

You don't need to hike a giant trail to enjoy Cadillac Mountain.

Once you're at the top, there's plenty to explore.

You'll find:

πŸ“ Iconic Cadillac Mountain summit signs
πŸ₯Ύ Walking paths
🌊 Incredible panoramic views
πŸ›οΈ A gift shop
🚻 Restrooms
πŸ“Έ Plenty of photo opportunities

One of our favorite things about the summit is simply wandering around and taking in the different views. You can see mountains, forests, islands, and the ocean stretching out in different directions. 🌊🌲

And, of course, don't forget to grab those classic Cadillac Mountain photos!

πŸ₯Ύ Can You Hike to Cadillac Mountain?

Absolutely!

If you don't want to drive to the summit β€” or you simply want to experience Cadillac Mountain on foot β€” there are several hiking trails that reach the summit.

One of the most popular options is the Cadillac North Ridge Trail.

Cadillac North Ridge Trail

πŸ“ Approximately 4.4 miles round trip

The trail takes you from the lower portion of the mountain toward the summit and provides beautiful views along the way.

But don't let the mileage fool you. This isn't necessarily an easy stroll through the woods. There are steep sections and rocky terrain, so make sure you research current trail conditions and come prepared with appropriate footwear, water, and plenty of time.

πŸ₯Ύ As always, check current conditions with the National Park Service before heading out.

πŸ“Έ Is Cadillac Mountain Worth Visiting?

In our opinion? Absolutely.

Cadillac Mountain is one of those Acadia National Park experiences that is worth making room for on your itinerary.

Whether you're visiting for sunrise, driving the scenic road, hiking to the summit, or simply wandering around the top and taking in the views, there's something pretty special about standing at the highest point in the park and looking out over Mount Desert Island. πŸ’™

Just don't make the mistake of assuming you can drive up whenever you want.
