🥾 The Perfect Half-Day Acadia National Park Itinerary: A Lesser-Known Side of the Park 🌲

This intricate stone hallway is the opening to stunning views

Looking for something beyond the crowds of Cadillac Mountain, Jordan Pond, and Acadia's most popular trails? 👀 Add Sieur de Monts to your itinerary.

Tucked just south of Bar Harbor, the Sieur de Monts area packs an incredible amount of scenery, history, easy walking trails, and one seriously underrated hike into a relatively small area. 🌿

If you only have a few hours in Acadia National Park, this is one of my favorite ways to experience a different side of the park.

And the highlight? Homans Path. 🥾✨

But the best part is that you can turn your visit into a half-day itinerary that combines a short, adventurous mountain trail with a peaceful botanical garden, educational exhibits, and one of the most unique boardwalk walks in Acadia. 🌲🌉

Here's exactly how I'd do it. 👇

🥾 Homans Path: The Hidden Gem Hike in Acadia National Park

If you're searching for a lesser-known hike in Acadia National Park that still feels like an adventure, put Homans Path on your list. 📍

Located in the Sieur de Monts area, Homans Path is only 0.3 miles one way, but don't let that short distance fool you. This is a steep, rocky trail with granite staircases and narrow passages, and the stonework is what makes this little trail so memorable. 🪨

The trail features some incredible examples of Acadia's famous stone craftsmanship, including intricate granite staircases, walls of stone, and a distinctive narrow passage that almost feels like you're walking through a stone hallway.

It's a completely different hiking experience from the wider, relatively gentle trails found elsewhere in the park. 🌲

And then there's the view. 👀⛰️

📍 Homans Path Trail Stats

  • 📏 Distance: 0.3 miles one way

  • 🔄 Round trip: Approximately 0.6 miles if you return the same way

  • 🥾 Difficulty: Short but steep

  • 🪨 Terrain: Granite steps, rocky and uneven sections, narrow passages

  • ⏱️ Time: Approximately 15–30 minutes one way

  • ♿ Accessibility: Not wheelchair or stroller accessible

  • 📍 Trailhead: Sieur de Monts

The National Park Service notes that Homans Path connects with Emery Path, which can then be followed to Schiff Path and eventually the summit of Dorr Mountain.

So if you're looking for a much longer and more challenging adventure, Homans Path can become part of a larger Dorr Mountain route. 🏔️

For this half-day itinerary, though, we're keeping it short and sweet.

And trust me—the stonework alone makes this little trail worth seeing. 🤩

🚐 Start Your Visit at Sieur de Monts

The easiest way to begin this itinerary is at Sieur de Monts, where several of these experiences are clustered together.

You can drive directly to the Sieur de Monts parking area, which has about 45 parking spaces, including accessible spaces. Parking can fill during busy periods, so arriving earlier is always a good idea. 🌅

Another option is to skip the parking hunt altogether and take the fare-free Island Explorer shuttle 🚌 to Sieur de Monts when seasonal service is operating.

This can be especially convenient during busy summer and early fall days when Acadia's parking areas can fill quickly.

Pro tip: Check the current Island Explorer schedule before you go and consider using the shuttle if you want to spend less time searching for a parking spot and more time exploring. 😉

🌿 Stop #1: Wild Gardens of Acadia

Before or after your hike, take some time to wander through the Wild Gardens of Acadia.

This is one of those places that's easy to overlook when you're focused on checking off Acadia's famous mountains and coastal viewpoints—but it's absolutely worth adding to your itinerary. 🌱

The garden showcases many of the native habitats and plant communities found throughout Mount Desert Island, giving you a chance to see a miniature version of Acadia's diverse landscape in one peaceful area.

And there's no separate admission fee for the Wild Gardens. You simply need your Acadia National Park entrance pass. 🎟️

It's an especially nice stop for families, photographers, nature lovers, and anyone who wants a slower-paced experience between hikes. 📸🌿

🏡 Stop #2: Sieur de Monts Nature Center

Right next to the gardens is the Sieur de Monts Nature Center, making it easy to combine both stops without moving your car.

Inside, you'll find exhibits and activities focused on Acadia's natural environment and the science behind the scenery. 🐦🌲

It's a great place to learn more about the park before heading onto the trails—and there's also a small shop/bookstore area where you can browse for souvenirs or park-related goodies. 📚🛍️

The Nature Center is seasonal, so check the current operating schedule before planning your visit.

🌉 Stop #3: Take the Easy Stroller - Friendly Jesup Path Boardwalk

Now for the complete change of pace. ✨

After exploring the gardens and Nature Center, head onto Jesup Path.

If you're traveling with young kids, grandparents, or anyone who isn't looking for a steep mountain hike, this is one of the best additions to the itinerary. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Jesup Path is a mostly level trail that travels through a beautiful white birch forest and wetland area on a raised wooden boardwalk. 🌳🌉

The full Jesup Path and Hemlock Path Loop is approximately 1.5 miles round trip, with mostly flat terrain.

The boardwalk is one of those spots where the journey really is the destination. 😍

You'll trade granite staircases for peaceful forest views, tall birch trees, and that unmistakable Acadia feeling of being completely surrounded by nature. 🍃

🥾➡️🌉 The Best Part: Combine Jesup Path + Homans Path

Rather than thinking of these as completely separate hikes, you can combine the two experiences for a really unique half-day in Acadia.

Start near the Wild Gardens and follow Jesup Path toward the intersection with Hemlock Path and Homans Path.

You'll go from a peaceful, almost completely level boardwalk through birch trees...

...to a steep trail climbing through the forest on granite stairs. 🪨🥾

It's such a dramatic change in scenery and terrain for such a short distance.

When you reach the Homans Path junction, turn onto Homans and start climbing. ⛰️

This is where you'll see the intricate stonework that makes the trail so special.

The trail quickly becomes steeper as granite steps lead upward through the forest. You'll pass through narrow sections of stone and that distinctive stone "hallway" before continuing toward Emery Path.

For this itinerary, you can simply enjoy the climb and views before retracing your route back toward Sieur de Monts.

But if you're an experienced hiker and want to extend the adventure, you can continue beyond Homans Path toward Emery Path and Schiff Path, which provide routes toward Dorr Mountain. 🏔️

Just be aware that this turns your easy half-day itinerary into a much more strenuous mountain hike.

Put Homans Path on your list. 🥾✨

It may be short, but this hidden corner of Acadia packs a LOT of adventure into just 0.3 miles.
