And here's the part we loved most...
We saw only TWO other people the entire time we were there. π
For a park as popular as Acadia National Park, finding a peaceful trail like this feels like winning the hiking lottery.

π² What Is the Lower Hadlock Pond Trail Like?
The Lower Hadlock Pond Trail winds through the forest around the lower portion of Hadlock Pond.
And while the hike itself is relatively short and easy, there's plenty to keep you interested along the way.
Think:
π² Maine forest
π Pond views
π Cute little bridges
π¦ A waterfall
ποΈ A historic dam house
π₯Ύ Roots and uneven terrain
π Lots of peaceful New England scenery
It's not one of those hikes where you reach the end and think, "Well, that was anticlimactic."
The scenery keeps changing as you make your way around the trail, which makes the relatively short distance feel like a fun little adventure.
π¦ There's a Waterfall!
One of the fun surprises along the Lower Hadlock Pond Trail is the waterfall.
It's another reason this makes such a great family hike in Acadia National Park.
Kids get little landmarks to look forward to along the way instead of just hearing, "We're almost there!" for the 47th time. π
And if you've got a camera with you, there are plenty of spots where you'll want to stop for photos.
π And the Bridges Are Adorable
We also loved all the little bridges along the trail.
They're not exactly massive engineering marvels...
But they're cute, and that's all that matters. π
They add a little something extra to the hike and make the trail feel more adventurous, especially for kids.
ποΈ Don't Miss the Historic Dam House
Another cool detail you'll come across is the historic little dam house tucked into the woods.
It's one of those things that's easy to walk past if you're focused solely on the trail, but we love finding these little pieces of history while hiking.
Acadia isn't just about granite peaks and ocean views.
There are historic structures, old carriage roads, bridges, ponds, dams, and remnants of the people who helped shape the landscape.
And Lower Hadlock Pond gives you a little taste of that history along with the scenery.
π¨βπ©βπ§ Is Lower Hadlock Pond Trail Family-Friendly?
Yes!
If you're searching for family-friendly hikes in Acadia National Park, we'd absolutely consider this one.
The trail is only about 1.6 miles with approximately 60 feet of elevation gain, so you're not dealing with a major climb.
Most people can complete it in roughly 30 minutes to an hour, depending on your pace and how often you stop.
And trust us...
You're going to stop.
Between the bridges, waterfall, pond views, and historic features, there are plenty of reasons to slow down.
π₯Ύ One Important Tip
Easy does not mean "wear flip-flops." π
There are roots and uneven surfaces along the trail, so we recommend wearing proper hiking shoes or comfortable footwear with good traction.
Especially if the trail is wet.
π Getting to Lower Hadlock Pond
One of the easiest ways to access this area is via the Island Explorer shuttle.
Look for the #6 shuttle, which services the area.
If you're driving, you can also park at Brown Mountain.
π ΏοΈ Brown Mountain Parking
Parking at Brown Mountain is limited because the area serves several different trailheads.
When we visited, we had to walk approximately 50 feet along the road to reach the start of the trail.
So if you're driving, don't be surprised if you don't immediately see a giant obvious parking lot dedicated specifically to Lower Hadlock Pond.
This is one of those places where having a little patience β and knowing what to expect ahead of time β makes the experience much easier.
π« Can You Swim in Lower Hadlock Pond?
No β swimming and wading are not allowed.
And this is an important distinction if you've been exploring other ponds around Mount Desert Island.
Lower Hadlock Pond serves as part of the local water supply, so visitors aren't permitted to swim or wade in the water.
Pets are also not allowed in the water.
π Dogs are allowed on the trail as long as they're leashed, though.
So bring your pup along for the hike β just keep them out of the pond.
